home | about njb | ultimate | classic | trials and scrambles classic | road bikes winning | choice contact us high performance convenience & reliability long life & value for money a comprehensive range of shocks specifically designed and manufactured to meet the differing conditions for racing, scrambles, trials and road use, in a choice of sizes, spring weights and damping. about has now been in business for more than 25 years. in 1990 norman blakemore took early retirement after 24 years in a number of technical capacities with girling, at one time the premier motor cycle shock absorber manufacturer. he took a specification developed by girling with the leading works riders of the time, and never supplied to the paying customer, and after further development this formed the basis for . again working with expert riders updated shocks for motocross/scrambles, road and circuit racing were developed, and finally a range of shocks for road bikes was introduced. the aim has always been to provide a range of shocks developed specially for each discipline, of high quality, with reliability, at a sensible price. direct sales are made throughout the world and we have agents and distributors in several countries. over the years many changes have been made to specifications, reflecting changes in technology, riding styles, and customer expectations. most shocks are built to order and can be changed to meet any special requirements, and delivery times are usually short. the picture shows the proprietor testing the product in deepest wales. "it’s a hard job but somebody has to do it." njb 'ultimate' shocks njb have constantly updated their classic shocks over the years but there have been few changes in their appearance. riders have been asking for aluminium shocks as these are very attractive, particularly on competition bikes, but we were unhappy with the wear rate of aluminium bodies. for the best of both worlds, aluminium for reduced weight and appearance, with a steel body (chrome plated of course) for maximum life, our new ‘ultimate’ shocks have addressed both of these demands as well as having new features to enhance the performance of the shocks and the set-up experience. the wide spring preload adjustment is used to set up the spring for best performance, and the ride height of the machine can then be changed by adjusting the shock length (without removing the shocks) to obtain the best steering response, without compromising the preload setting. the length is adjustable between 335 and 385mm and cost £189 a pair. ‘ultimate’ shocks can be used with the spring at the top or bottom to avoid any installation problems. trials and scrambles we have been very fortunate in getting experienced, in fact champion, riders involved in our development programmes. the launching of production shocks at the pre 65 2 day trial in scotland was great success with class awards and top ten places, and the first batch of shocks sold out in short order. these trials shocks are a real step forward and give a ‘monoshock’ feel resulting from low preload, extra soft damping and the unique two stage bump stops. the scrambles shocks also had a winning launch, if not at such a high level. street shocks perfect for adding a bit of sparkle to your road bike, street shocks can also be used to add the finishing touch to your special, be it triton, tribsa, brat bike or bobber. these sometimes quite radical reworks can be let down by a failure to establish the correct ‘attitude’. a bike which is nose down, or tail high, spoils the all important look that you are seeking. now, with ’ultimate’ street shocks you can adjust the length of the shocks whilst fitted to the bike, and just step back for a look, until it is quite perfect. you will not be disappointed with the performance, these ‘ultimate’ shocks enhance good handling. njb classic shocks introduced 25 years ago njb classic shocks have undergone considerable development and refinement and established a reputation for performance and long life at a ‘sensible’ price. they will continue to be available for trials, scrambles, road and racing for those who prefer the more ‘classic’ black and chrome finish. trials and scrambles clubman trials classic expert available in 330, 340 and 350mm centres @ £72 a pair. of ‘old fashioned’ non gas construction these shocks are for the trials rider who wants traditional 1960s ‘girling shocks’ appearance. usually having an all black finish, they can be fitted with chrome springs, and/or chrome half covers. such variations are no problem for njb, most shocks are built to the rider’s requirements and can take account of any unusual aspects of the design, or variations in weight etc. available for trials and scrambles in 300, 330, 340, 357 and 390mm centres @ £128 a pair. coming more up to date these expert shocks resemble the gas shocks of the 1980s, and they are fitted with the springs at the bottom. of robust gas shock construction these are built for trials, scrambles and racing and each specification provides the acceptable travel for each discipline and suitable springing and damping. classic trikshox available in 330,340,357 and 390mm centres @ £156 a pair. the best performing of the classic range, trikshox take advantage of twin springs to provide multi rate performance. again travel, springing and damping is appropriate for the discipline involved in trials, scrambles or racing, and again they are assembled to suit the individual’s requirements. the trials trikshox have low friction end fixings to take maximum advantage of the very light damping provided. these remove the ‘wind up’ which is inevitable with rubber in torsion, bonded bushes, and provides more sensitivity. classic road bike shocks available in lengths from 280 to 350mm centres @ £79 with exposed springs or £89 with black/chrome covers. when rebuilding old bikes many will want to retain the appearance of the original and replacement components have to maintain this , whilst providing improved performance. these road bike shocks have been designed closely to resemble the girling shocks that were fitted to the majority of british bikes. they are supplied in the ‘classic’ shrouded form, with a black top and chrome lower shroud and in ‘open spring’ form for more sporting bikes. -
